Bill Allred's Classic Jazz Band
Thirteen

Well folks, here it is.  Several people have expressed concern about our use of the bad-luck number... as the title of this recording, but to us it’s been a positive, non-triskaidekaphobian adventure.  This is, in fact, our 13th recording, and we think it may be our best yet. But whatever the title, we’re now in our 20th year together, and we want to dedicate this newest recording to all the fans and friends and families who have enabled us to continue to survive in the fickle world of music.

In this album, we present four more 10-piece masterworks from our posthumous mentor, Matty Matlock.  In a couple of them, you’ll hear John Allred playing in the distinct style of Matty’s super bone man, Abram Lincoln.  I get my licks in as well.  Randy Morris was at the piano on these tunes, and also overdubbed rhythm guitar in the style of George Van Epps, who originally played these great charts in Matty’s Paducah Patrol band.

Thirteen also includes more musical pen work from our drummer friend and arranger Terry Waddell.  In addition to “Stompin’ at the Savoy,” Terry arranged “Well, Get It”, the two vocals, “What A Wonderful World” and “Wrap Your Troubles in Dreams.”  He’s also responsible for our redux of “Mrs. Robinson” and “Up, up and Away,” two clever pop charts that Bob Haggart originally arranged for another favorite group of ours, The World’s Greatest Jazz Band.
And speaking of Bob Haggart, it was a special thrill for me to finally record “My Inspiration.”  This is an arrangement of one of his own compositions that Bob wrote for me years ago when we were performing together on a jazz cruise.

“Well, Get It!,” a tune Tommy Dorsey once recorded, is a long-overdue trumpet-duo piece from Charlie Bertini and Bobby Pickwood.  Throughout the album our piano duo, Jeff Phillips and Randy Morris, take turns at reinventing the keyboard, and on several numbers Terry Myers doubles on baritone sax along with the other reeds he usually plays.  Terry’s tenor feature, “Tickletoe,” a chart by Dave Wolpe, was recorded for possible use on our 12th CD, but we didn’t have room for it on that one.
We’re also proud to present our new drummer, Eddie Metz, Jr., on this recording.  Eddie brings [has brought?] a new kind of fire to our rhythm section, and the blaze is especially hot on “South Rampart Street Parade” and the Buddy Rich classic “Love For Sale.”  Superbly arranged for us by sometime Classic Band reedman Dave Mackenzie.  You’ll also hear Eddie, Jay Mueller and Jeff seemingly joined at the hip on “Stompin’ at the Savoy.”

All in all, everybody gets to strut their stuff on this high-powered disk.  We hope you’ll enjoy listening to Thirteen as much as we enjoyed making it for you.

Good listening,

BILL ALLRED
