Trombonist
Bill Allred, who has mostly recorded for very small
labels throughout his career, gained some exposure
with this Sun Jazz CD. Teamed up with some of the best
trad jazz musicians who happened to live in Florida
at the time (cornetist David Jones, clarinetist Jack
Matese, Terry Myers on reeds and pianist Eddie Higgins),
plus two ringers (bassist Milt Hinton and drummer Butch
Miles), Allred and his sidemen perform eight Dixieland
and swing standards. Highlights include "Singing
the Blues," "Oh Baby," "Sugar" and "St.
Louis Blues." Mainstream fans will want to search
for this one.
